New Zealand Campervan Hire is second to none in the range of vehicles offered for hire. In Auckland alone there are over 30 different hire supply companies each offering their own range of campervans, sleeper cars or motorhomes. So how do you choose?
Firstly you need a campervan that has both enough seat belts and enough beds for everyone travelling. If there are six people and you rent a 4-berth, the rental will not go ahead. Safety is paramount in New Zealand.
The top of the range luxury six-berths are fantastic. There is a choice of bed layout. Three doubles, two double beds and two single beds. Perfect for a group of friends travelling together or a family.
The 4-berths also have different bed layouts. Generally the double bed is above the cab and the two singles or another double is at the rear of the camper and is made up nightly by removing a table. Some couples prefer to sleep above the cab and have the table always in place so using the extra space. Perfect for a long hire.
The 2-berth campervans with a shower and onboard wc are always popular with couples or two friends. The beds can be two singles or a large double. These vehicles offer complete freedom especially when they are fully self-contained. Freedom camping or wild camping is permitted in all vehicles where they are self-contained so leave no waste.
If there are no onboard facilities then renters are required to overnight in a campsite of which there are hundreds.
Hi-top vehicles are a good choice as they offer comfortable sleeping and good cooking facilities and often have a good sized fridge. They will often sleep up to five people.
Low-Top campers are great for the budget conscious as they are very economical.
Sleeper cars are the most economical and have a large double bed in the rear of an SUV with a gas ring and small sink to wash up in.
Finally there is the option of a 4WD bush camper if an off-road vehicle is required. This is a Toyota Hilux, designed for rough terrain and rough roads.
To get the best rates book early. There are great deals to be had on early bookings. Savings can also be made by booking older vehicles. These can sometimes be a bit tired around the edges but do offer great value.
