The roads in the mountains of Switzerland are often steep and windy. Take extra care and reduce your speed. If you are driving through the Oberalp pass check with the locals first as this is a challenging route for larger vehicles.
If you want to travel on the motorways you will need to purchase a "Vignette" - these are stickers to show that you have paid the fee to travel on motorways. If you don't display the Vignette you will be liable to a fine. These are available at garages, post offices or at border control. The can also be purchased onlineand are valid for one year.
The speed limit is 80kmh in towns and cities and 100kmh on main roads. You can travel up to 120kmh on the motorways.
It is very important that you check road conditions before you set out especially if you are travelling through the mountains. Roads are subject to snow drifts and landslides. The Swiss Met office has up to date information.
Check with your phone provider. Turn off roaming so that you don't incur charges. It may be cheaper to hire a phone or buy a local sim card for your own phone while you are travelling. There is an abundance of internet hot spots and most campsites offer this facility. Many cafes have free wifi and campsites.
We recommend that you stock up your campervan before you start your road trip. You will have an onboard fridge and food storage cupboards. The depots that we use are close to amenities so check out the local shops and supermarkets such as Denner, Spar,Coop, Lidl, Migros and Volg. You can then shop local as you tour Switzerland.
No, the rules are strict and you are not permitted to free camp. Overnight stays must be on a designated campsite.
