FAQ on Renting a 4x4 Campervan in Namibia

Why Should I Rent a 4x4 Camper in Namibia?

Namibia is so well set up for a camping road trip. Choose a 4x4 camper with roof-top tents if you are quite agile as you do have to climb a ladder to get to the tents.

A 4x4 Camper such as a Toyota Hilux or a Toyota Doublecab from either Bobo or Britz means you can go into almost all of the game parks in Namibia.

How are Namibia's roads classified?

When you are planning a road trip in Namibia, you need to be prepared for the road conditions. If you are going into the game parks, many of the roads are in good condition but they will have classifications. These are important to know when making the right choice for your road trip.

Most main roads are tarmac and are classified as "C" roads. These would be "A" roads in the UK and secondary highways in the USA. "D" roads are tracks and require a 4x4.

Unsealed roads are regularly graded but you should keep your speed down to a maximum of 80kmh as there is a higher skid risk.

If you rent a 4x4 you will have more space for all your gear, you are higher off the ground so see more and you know that if you do get onto tracks you'll be ok.

What do I need to know when planning my trip around Namibia?

When planning your road trip around Namibia allow extra time for travelling long distances. Days are short and you shouldn't drive after dark as there are many wandering large animals on the road.

Make sure you carry extra fuel as filling stations are few and far between.

Carry extra water for both you and your vehicle.

There are many campsites right across Namibia and they are often in remote and beautiful places sited for some natural resources such as watering holes where wild animals congregate.

Check the age of your vehicle before you hire. Younger vehicles are in better condition and have lower mileage and reduce the chance of breakdown.

What side of the road do you drive on in Namibia?

Drive on the left side in Namibia.

Are the roads busy in Namibia?

No, not really. Once you leave Windhoek the roads tend to be quite empty and in good condition.

Will GPS work in Namibia?

Yes, but not in all places. We strongly advise taking maps and familiarising yourself with it before you go. GPS is great when phones are charged and signals are good. When they are not the paper map is the best option. Also get a local Sim card to save on calls within Namibia.

Are there shops and stores everywhere?

Most small towns have grocery stores selling the basics. You can top up on local fruits and vegetables. Your fridge should keep them cool. Small towns and villages usually provide fuel too.

Can I drive from Windhoek to Maun?

Yes, you can drive from Namibia to Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. Try out one-way rentals in the drop down box on our booking engine. You can see the difference in fees and may find a better option that suits you rather than booking a round-trip.

What are the driving rules in Namibia?

Keep your headlights on at all times.

Don't drive after dark.

Drive on the left

Why do some people deflate their tyres in Namibia?

It is quite common to see people deflating their tyres when driving on gravel roads or sandy roads to increase the surface area of the tyre to improve traction. The tyres must be re-inflated once you have returned to a normal road surface or damage could occur to the tyre.

When should I use low-ratio four-wheel-drive?

Four-wheel drive should be engaged if you are driving on tracks or roads with uneven surfaces. Engage four-wheel drive if the surface of the road is muddy and when you are crossing a ford. If you get stuck, engage low-ratio four-wheel drive to give you extra torque to tackle very steep terrain.

Learn to use the diff-lock before you set off as this will help you get out of trouble if you get stuck. This will lock the wheels so they all turn at the same speed. Only use the low-four-wheel drive at slow and very slow speeds. Only use the diff-lock at low or very low speeds.

When is the best time to plan a road trip?

If you are looking to plan a road trip you don't want it to be too hot and you probably want it to be dry so we suggest booking between July and October. There are plenty of animals around at this time too.

Can I pay for fuel and park fees by credit card?

You have to pay for fuel and park fees by cash in Namibian dollars, US dollars or South Africa Rand.

Are two weeks long enough to see Namibia?

If you spend two weeks you will have a fantastic adventure. The longer you stay the more you will see. Sometimes taking your time to learn how to spot the wild animals means that you start getting good at it and see more. A four week trip would be very rewarding. There are plenty of itineraries on the web to help you plan your tour. See our own Namibia Trip Planner

Namibia has a good network of roads and tracks across the Game Parks. It takes time to cover any great distances as many roads are gravel roads.

Can we stay at Lodges in the parks?

It is worth staying at the lodges as they offer meals and events to non-residents and those who are just using their camping facilities. Join a Namibian Sundowner. Book well in advance if you are travelling to remote areas as there are limited spaces available. Useful link: "Game Parks in Namibia

Is it easy to drive a 4x4 camper?

If you can drive a manual car you will be ok with a 4x4 camper. If you are planning on going off-road or using tracks in the game parks we suggest you take a short training course on driving a 4x4 before you set off. If you only drive an automatic car and only hold a licence for automatic vehicles make sure you choose one of our many automatic 4x4 camper options. These are the Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Hilux Double Cab, and Ford Ranger. The ford Discoverer is a motorhome and isn't a 4x4 vehicle so you would be advised to stay on tarmac roads.

When is the best time to see animals?

There are animals around all the time and you will see them as you drive. Hunting animals such as the big cats are on the move at dawn and dusk. Elephants see out water holes as do many other animals during this time too. Park up by a water hole and wait.

How much is diesel?

Is insurance available on 4x4 campers?

Yes, and we recommend that you take full cover insurance for your Namibia trip. There are gravel and sand roads and driving can be challenging at times. With full cover it will give you peace-of-mind.

Take two spare tyres.

If there is an option to take an additional spare tyre we recommend you take it. Rent a compressor too for inflating tyres after deflating tyres for sand and gravel road driving.
